Authentication is the verification of the identity of a person or process. Verification is a way to ensure that users are who they say they are. This system uses CalNet Authentication to identify its users. Identity is verified through CalNet, while authorization to access local resources are determined locally.
Authorization is the process of determining what types of activities are permitted. Usually, authorization is in the context of authentication, once you have authenticated a user, they may be authorized different types of access or activity. This system maintains three levels of authorization, see "Authorization Levels" for more information.
Three Authorization Levels exist, and are defined as follows:

Grant access
Create, modify and deactivate accounts
View Accounts
View Services
Edit Services

CalNet maintains a database of employees, and has one department assocated to each employee. We refer to this department as the "CalNet Identified Department" or "CID". We use the CID to determine which department an employee was hired into, and grant default Level 1 access to a user based on their CID.
User management refers to the process of assigning permissions to users. Users with Authorization Level 3 (AP/PO Reviewer) will be able to allow people from outside a department to gain Level 1 or Level 2 access to accounts and projects. The list of AP/PO Reviewers is maintined by HRMS. A list is available within this application, simply click on the "AP/PO Reviewers" link.
A session refers to an instance of a service, and starts when the service is first provided and closes when the service is ended. In this case, the session is started when a user logs into the system, and ends when the user logs off the system or becomes inactive for five minutes. A user may be allowed to have multiple sessions active simultaneously
A "View" refers to the layout of information on a web page. The Recharge Authorization Management System consists of many views enabling access to:
  • Accounts
  • Invoices
  • Service Locations
  • My Privileges
  • Authorizations
  • Reviewers
